If there’s one question I hear most often from my voice over students, it’s this: “How on earth am I supposed to fit voice work into my already jam-packed life?” Trust me, I get it. Between day jobs, family commitments, and the occasional need for actual sleep, carving out time to pursue voice over can feel like trying to squeeze water from a stone.
But here’s what years in this industry has taught me: voice over success isn’t just about raw talent or even connections—it’s about strategic time management. The most successful voice artists I know aren’t necessarily those with the most naturally gifted pipes; they’re the ones who’ve mastered the art of fitting focused voice work into the nooks and crannies of their busy lives.
Whether you’re juggling voice over with a full-time job, parenting responsibilities, or other creative pursuits, the path forward isn’t about finding more hours in the day (we’ve all tried—they’re not there!). It’s about making the most of the hours you have.
I created a webinar called “From Chaos to Clarity” which will teach you all about strategic planning for voice artists and so much more!
The Power of Weekly Planning – Strategic Time Management
Having a structured weekly plan isn’t just about staying busy—it’s about purposeful action. When you understand the “why” behind each task, your motivation and focus naturally increase. Effective planning ensures you’re investing your precious time in activities that genuinely move your career forward rather than just spinning your wheels.
Building Your Voice Over Week
A successful voice over weekly plan should include these essential elements:
Daily Voice Practice: This is your foundation. Just like athletes train their muscles, daily practice hones your vocal instrument and keeps your skills sharp. Even 15 minutes of focused practice beats sporadic hour-long sessions.
Strategic Networking: Connections fuel this industry. Dedicate time each week for reaching out to potential clients, following up with contacts, or engaging with the voice over community. Remember, today’s casual conversation could be tomorrow’s booking.
Industry Research: The voice over landscape evolves constantly. Stay ahead by researching market trends, emerging niches, and new opportunities. Knowledge is power—and in voice over, it’s bookings too.
Social Media Presence: Your online presence is your always-on audition booth. Thoughtfully engage with your audience and showcase your talents authentically. The right post could catch the right producer’s eye at just the right moment.
Balancing Passion and Profession
While career advancement matters, maintaining life balance is equally crucial. Voice artists are particularly vulnerable to burnout because our craft is so personal—it’s literally our voice on the line.
Here’s my approach to maintaining harmony:
Prioritize Business Tasks: I tackle my most important professional tasks when my energy is highest. This ensures my career momentum continues even during busy weeks.
Schedule Personal Time: Time with family, exercise, and personal passions aren’t luxuries—they’re necessities. They recharge your creative batteries and keep your performances authentic. In my case, I’ve found that my study of natural horsemanship actually informs my voice work in unexpected ways, bringing an organic quality to my reads.
Honor Your Schedule: When you’re working, be fully present in your work. When you’re with loved ones or pursuing personal interests, be fully there too. This presence of mind reduces guilt and increases fulfillment in both areas.
For me, this balance isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential. My voice over career thrives alongside time with family and friends, health-promoting activities, and my passion for animals, especially horses. This integration of professional ambition and personal joy doesn’t just make me happier; it makes my voice work more authentic and connected.
Your Next Steps
Creating a sustainable voice over career amidst life’s demands isn’t about superhuman productivity—it’s about strategic time management, consistent action, and honoring both your professional goals and personal needs.
