Overcoming the First Hurdles in Your Voiceover Journey: Embrace Courage, Not Perfection

If you’re just starting out on your Voiceover journey, I want to help you shift your mindset to embracing courage instead of chasing perfection. This will set you up for long-term success. When people think about starting their voice-over journey, they often don’t realise that the first steps can be the hardest. These early hurdles like, recording yourself for the first time or sending that recording to a coach—are monumental achievements. Yet, so many fail to celebrate these moments, even though they take incredible courage.

The Courage to Begin: Your First Steps Matter

One of the biggest challenges I’ve noticed among beginners is the fear of imperfection. Recording your voice and sending it off for feedback can feel intimidating, especially if you’re unsure about how you sound. But here’s the thing—there’s no perfect way to read a script. If five different people read the same script, you’ll hear five unique versions. None of them are “right” or “wrong.” What matters is your willingness to connect with the material, have fun, and simply try.

At the start of your voiceover journey, it’s natural to overthink everything—how you sound, whether you’re delivering the “perfect” read. But it’s important to realise that overthinking can hold you back. Instead, focus on script analysis, understanding the material, and then letting go. Play with it. Enjoy the process. Because the real magic happens when you stop overthinking and start doing.

At the beginning of my voiceover journey I read a book that had a profound impact on my relationship with fear. Feel the Fear and do it Anyway and do it anyway by Susan Jeffers. Why not head to your local library and grab a copy of this unbelievable book about not eliminating our fear, rather learning how to dance with it.

Embrace Imperfection on your voiceover journey : There’s No Perfect Read

A common misconception in voiceover work is that there’s a single “perfect” way to deliver a line. I can assure you—there isn’t. In fact, trying to chase perfection can lead to burnout and self-doubt, especially in the early stages of your journey. The reality is that every interpretation of a script brings something valuable, and your unique voice and style are what will set you apart.

So, if you’re stuck wondering, “Am I doing this right? Is my read good enough?”—take a breath and remember: there is no one way to do it. The important thing is that you’re trying, learning, and growing. Every time you record yourself, you’re building a skill that will serve you throughout your career.

Adults and the Beginner’s Mindset: Why Starting Can Feel Harder

Interestingly, I’ve found that many of the people I coach are established professionals in other fields. These are fully grown adults who are, for the first time in a long time, at the beginning of a new journey. And that’s hard. When you’re younger, it’s easier to accept the discomfort of being a beginner, but as adults, we tend to resist it.

Many people give up early on because they can’t surrender to that feeling of not knowing what they’re doing. But here’s the truth: the voiceover journey is filled with moments of uncertainty. The key is to show up with courage, even when you feel unsure. Your first recording, your first feedback session—they’re just the beginning. You’re not expected to be perfect; you’re expected to try.

Show Up with Courage

As you move forward in your voiceover career, remind yourself that perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Each step you take, whether it’s recording your voice or sending that file to a coach, is a victory in itself. Every successful voiceover artist started where you are right now, full of uncertainty but willing to try. You can do this too.
