How to build a thriving creative business while protecting your personal life
These questions comes up in nearly every conversation I have with fellow artists: “Do I really need to share everything about my life to be successful online?” “How do I protect my privacy as a creative online”?
The pressure is real. If you scroll through any social media platform, you’ll see creators sharing intimate details of their daily lives, their children’s milestones, their personal struggles, and their family moments. Message seems clear: authenticity equals exposure, and exposure equals success.
But here’s what I want you to know: that’s simply not true.
The Blurred Lines of Digital Life
We live in an unprecedented time where the lines between public and private have become completely blurred. People livestream births, share their children’s first steps with thousands of strangers, and document every meal, every emotion, every moment.
And somewhere in this digital chaos, many artists have come to believe that this level of sharing is not just expected, but required for professional success.
My Journey to Professional Boundaries – Protect privacy as a creative
When I first moved my voice-over business online 5 years ago, I was terrified. As someone who leans more toward introversion, the idea of putting myself “out there” felt overwhelming. I consulted marketing experts and nervously asked about using family content. The response was telling: “You’ll get faster views if you include your kids, but you do you.”
That moment crystallised something important for me: this was my choice to make.
I made a deliberate decision that my online presence would be entirely about my business, not about my family. When I take off my business hat at the end of the day, I put on my mum hat, my wife hat, my friend hat – and while these roles are spiritually connected to who I am, they don’t need to be connected in my online presence.
The Power of Choice – protect privacy as a creative
Here’s what I wish someone had told me when I was starting out, and what I want to tell every artist who’s struggling with this question:
You still have a choice.
In our rush to build online presence, we’ve forgotten that we’re in control of what we share. You don’t have to follow someone else’s playbook. You don’t have to do what “everyone else is doing.” You don’t have to sacrifice your comfort for clicks.
What Feels Right for You?
The only question that matters is this: What will help you sleep at night?
Your comfort level with online sharing is your business and your business only. You are the one who has to live with the consequences of what you put online. You are the one who has to feel good about your choices.
And here’s the truth that might surprise you: you can build a successful creative business while maintaining strict boundaries about your personal life.
A Strategic Approach to Online Presence
My online presence is curated. Every post, every image, every topic we discuss goes through me. It’s strategic, it’s professional, and it’s entirely focused on my work within my industry.
This approach has allowed me to:
- Build a thriving voice-over business
- Create meaningful connections with clients and colleagues
- Maintain my privacy and my family’s privacy
- Sleep well at night knowing I’m comfortable with my online footprint
For Fellow Introverts and Private Professionals
If you’re someone who has hesitated to build an online presence because you don’t want to share personal details, know this: you can absolutely succeed without compromising your boundaries.
You can:
- Focus entirely on your craft and expertise.
- Share your professional journey without sharing your personal one.
- Build authority through your work, just as I’ve done in my voice-over portfolio, rather than through personal disclosure.
- Create authentic connections while maintaining privacy.
- Protect privacy as a creative
The Bottom Line
Your art can speak for itself. Your expertise can stand alone. Your professional success doesn’t require personal exposure.
If someone tells you that you can’t succeed without sharing more than you’re comfortable with, if someone suggests that your boundaries are limiting your potential, if someone implies that your privacy is standing in the way of your success – remember this: your decision, your body, your choice, your consent.
Moving Forward
Whether you’re just starting to build your online presence or you’re reconsidering your current approach, take a moment to check in with yourself:
- What feels intrinsically right for you?
- What boundaries do you want to maintain?
- What would help you sleep better at night?
- What level of sharing aligns with your values?
Your answers to these questions are the only ones that matter.
