Building a successful voice-over career isn’t about instant success or quick wins. It’s about dedication, resilience, and nurturing relationships over time. In this blog, I’ll share how I navigated my journey and offer some tips for those starting out.
I encourage you to head over to my Coaching page to see how I support students to make leaps in their voice-over quest.
1. Nurturing Relationships Over Time
One of the most significant things I learned early on, was how essential it is to build genuine, long-term relationships. It takes courage and perseverance to reach out to people you don’t know. So I recommend knowing your why first. This won’t take away ALL the nerves, but it will ensure you know the outcome you are striving for.
Here is an example from my own life, that I feel demonstrates what can happen if we persevere. Years ago I reached out to an agency with an email introducing myself. Although they weren’t ready to take on new talent, I didn’t give up.
Instead, I consistently stayed in touch, sending regular updates on my progress, new jobs I had recorded, every skill I developed, and even the launch of my offerings as a Sonic Branding Strategist and Coach for beginners. It wasn’t about pestering but nurturing that connection—until, five years later, they were ready to bring me on board.
Lesson here? Persistence and patience are key! If you believe in your craft, you must invest the time to show others your growth.
2. The Mental Game of Success
Building a voice-over career isn’t just about your voice—it’s a mental game. So many artists find it hard to think of themselves as a business. But to succeed, you need to. It’s uncomfortable, sure, especially promoting yourself. But stepping out of that comfort zone is crucial.
You’ll face rejection, uncertainty, and moments where you question everything. The trick is to keep going. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” What drives you? These are the questions that help you stay grounded when things get tough.
3. The Power of Support and Community
A huge part of building a voice-over career is having a support system. Whether it’s a coach, peers, or a collective like ours, find people who get you. Voice work requires vulnerability, and having a community where you can share, learn, and grow makes all the difference.
Personally, I love hearing from other artists about their journeys. It’s how we grow—by learning from each other. And, for anyone out there feeling stuck because they haven’t booked a job in a few weeks, take a step back and refocus. Don’t let your self-worth get tied up in that.
4. Success Isn’t Overnight
The honest truth? Success is never overnight. It’s built from years of hard work, rejection, and determination. If you look at anyone with a long career, they’ll tell you the same. Don’t rush.
Take your time, focus on your goals, and enjoy life along the way. The magic happens when you blend your professional ambitions with who you are as a person.
Final Thoughts: It’s All About the Journey
I hope my story helps you reflect on your own journey. Remember, everyone’s path is different, and there’s no rush to the finish line. Embrace the ups and downs, stay focused on your “why,” and always be open to learning from others.
I was recently interviewed on the Equity Foundation Podcast, where I talked all about the beginners journey. It is my hope that you listen and find a takeaway that will help you today! I would love to know what resonates with you from the podcast?
